Been seeing a lot of FUD lately about precious metals, but I gotta say, after years of holding gold in my IRA, I'm feeling pretty vindicated. Remember those early 2020s tech valuations? Wild times. I was still deep in the startup grind then, but even with all the hype, something in my gut was telling me it was unsustainable. Thatβs when I started seriously looking into gold as a hedge.
Pulled the trigger on my first decent chunk of gold for the IRA right after the initial COVID dip, probably around late 2020/early 2021. Didn't go all in at once, dipped my toes in, then scaled up over the next year or two as I diversified out of some shakier tech stocks. Ended up with about 15-20% of my ~400k retirement portfolio in physical gold and some mining ETFs through a self-directed IRA. The whole setup process was smoother than I expected, honestly, even from a Bay Area perspective where everyone's usually pushing SaaS solutions for everything.
Fast forward to now, and those gold holdings have been a steady pillar. Not going to share exact numbers, but let's just say they've significantly outperformed a good portion of my other investments that got hit by the interest rate hikes and general market downturns. It's been a real stress reducer knowing that while some of my former unicorn dreams evaporated, a solid chunk of my wealth was safely tucked away in something tangible. Definitely glad I listened to that inner voice instead of just chasing the next big thing.
Anyone else in a similar boat? Did you get into gold earlier than your peers, and how's it playing out for you now? Curious to hear some other success stories or even just "I wish I did that" moments.
