Gold IRA Custodian Experiences – Who are you guys using?

    C
    Key Takeaways
    • Currently with Equity Trust and they’ve been… fine.
    • Based in Scottsdale, AZ, if that makes any difference regionally.
    • I know some people balk at those, but when you’ve built something from the ground up, protecting that wealth becomes paramount.

I’ve been eyeing a Roth conversion for a good chunk of my traditional IRA, mostly physical gold and silver allocated storage, and I’m curious about people’s custodian experiences. Currently with Equity Trust and they’ve been… fine. Not bad, not great. Fees are reasonable, and their online portal is decent for basic transactions, but when I had a more complex question about transferring a specific type of fractional gold coin from a self-directed account to a Roth, it felt like pulling teeth to get a clear answer. Took multiple calls and emails, which was annoying given the size of the assets we’re talking about (north of $2M allocated gold in that particular account).

My portfolio is pretty heavily weighted in physical metals (easily 70%+ of my 5M+ liquid assets), and I’m always looking for better service, especially with the current market volatility. Based in Scottsdale, AZ, if that makes any difference regionally. I started this whole journey back in 2012 when the market felt super sketchy, and honestly, the peace of mind having tangible assets has always been worth the storage fees for me as an entrepreneur. I know some people balk at those, but when you’ve built something from the ground up, protecting that wealth becomes paramount.

So, for those of you with significant precious metals IRAs, who are you using? Are there any custodians out there that truly stand out for their customer service, transparency, and ease of handling both common and uncommon precious metals questions? I'm talking about a custodian that feels like they're actually on your side, not just a processing center. Any stories about a custodian going above and beyond or, conversely, major red flags that made you switch?

Appreciate any insights. Trying to streamline this process as much as possible for future conversions and acquisitions. Thanks in advance!

My two cents on Gold IRA custodians: I went with Augusta Precious Metals for my gold IRA back in 2021 when I did my 401k rollover. I had about $75k in my old 401k and was looking to diversify my retirement savings beyond just stocks. Their fees were transparent, and the whole process, even with the tax advantages involved, felt really straightforward compared to some of the horror stories you hear. Living in Fresno, it was nice to have someone guide me through getting my precious metals stored securely.

Interesting to hear about Equity Trust. I've mostly heard good things, but "fine" isn't exactly a ringing endorsement, haha.

I've actually had a pretty smooth run with Kingdom Trust for my physical gold. Their fees seemed a touch higher upfront, but the customer service has been responsive and their online portal is surprisingly intuitive. Might be worth a look if you're feeling like Equity Trust isn't quite hitting the mark for your Roth conversion.

Oh man, Equity Trust. I feel you. I had a similar "fine, but not great" experience with them for my last rollover. It wasn't a gold IRA, just a traditional one, but the communication felt a bit clunky at times, and things took longer than I expected. I ended up switching to Millennium Trust after that and things have been a lot smoother. Never done physical gold with them though, so can't speak to that specifically, but their general service has been good.

Interesting! You mentioned Equity Trust has been "fine." Could you elaborate a bit on what makes them just "fine" and not, say, "great" or even "good"? What are some of the areas where you feel they could improve?

Definitely hear you on the custodian search. It can be a minefield out there. For anyone in the Providence area, I've had a really solid experience with Augusta Precious Metals. Their reps were incredibly helpful walking me through the setup for my $75k rollover last year, and I actually found a lot of their guidance on *physical gold vs. paper assets* on their blog super insightful when I was making my initial decisions. Always good to have that kind of detailed info readily available.

Interesting to hear about everyone's experiences. It seems like fees are a big differentiator, especially for storage. For those of you who've been using specific custodians for a while, how often do you find their storage fees adjust, and has anyone seen a significant jump that made you reconsider your provider?

Totally agree with the sentiment here! I've been with Augusta Precious Metals since late 2021, after making the move to get about $150k of my retirement funds into gold and silver. Their fee structure was transparent from the jump, and honestly, the onboarding process was smoother than I expected – especially with all the paperwork involved. Had a great experience with them.

Glad to see this thread! I'm in Omaha and moved a chunk of my old 401k, about $180k, into a Gold IRA a couple of years back. I spent a good month researching custodians, and honestly, the best resource I found was a simple comparison chart that Investopedia put out last year. It really helped me narrow down the fees and storage options without getting bogged down by sales pitches. Ended up going with something fairly standard, but that chart was key.

Honestly, I've seen a lot of folks in these threads praise direct storage with specific custodians, and while that's fine, I decided to go with a custodian that allows me to personally inspect my allocated physical gold at a third-party vault in Delaware. Call me old school, but for my $75k Gold IRA, actually seeing those bars and coins adds a layer of peace of mind that a receipt just can't provide, even if it means a little extra legwork.

Good thread. I've been with Augusta Precious Metals for about four years now, after switching from a smaller firm that just couldn't handle the volume I needed as I started really scaling up. I rolled over a good chunk of my old 401k – about $300k into physical gold and silver allocated storage – and the whole process, even with the paperwork involved, was pretty seamless. Their rep, Isaac, was incredibly patient with my endless questions during the initial setup, especially navigating the storage options given my Bay Area location and concerns about liquidity if I ever needed to sell.

Good thread! I went with Augusta Precious Metals back in '21 when I rolled over an old 401k. They were super transparent about their fees and the setup process was surprisingly smooth. Definitely ask about their storage options; I opted for segregated storage in Delaware, but they have other choices depending on what you're comfortable with. For me, it was important to know my specific bars were earmarked.

Been holding with Augusta for about three years now. Started with them after seeing a local ad here in KC, and frankly, their no-pressure approach was a breath of fresh air compared to some of the other calls I made. Walked through the whole setup over the phone, and had my first ~$60k transfer from an old 401k rolled over into physical gold and silver allocated storage in about three weeks. My favorite part is they send a quarterly physical statement, reassuring knowing exactly what's where.

This thread is super helpful. I'm just starting to look into Gold IRAs myself, frankly, a bit late to the game for someone who's had a decent portfolio for twenty years. My financial advisor back in Aspen has been pushing me towards Augusta Precious Metals, but I'm curious if anyone here has tried them and what their fees look like beyond the initial setup? It feels like there are so many options popping up.

Interesting question, especially with all the volatility lately. I've been with Augusta Precious Metals for about seven years now, based on a recommendation from a friend back when I was first diversifying beyond just stocks and real estate. Honestly, their fees are competitive, but what really sold me was their client education – they spent hours on the phone with me when I was first getting started with my $300k rollover, explaining everything clearly without any hard sell. The quarterly statements are always spot-on, and I've never had an issue with them.

Exactly this! You absolutely *nail* it with the due diligence on custodians. I went through the same exhaustive process back in '19, right after consolidating a few properties here in Palm Beach. Ended up with Augusta Precious Metals and honestly, their flat-fee structure for my 7-figure allocation was a game-changer compared to percentage-based fees that really start to sting at that level. No regrets whatsoever.

Funny enough, I actually started with Augusta and switched to Equity Trust a couple years ago for my gold IRA, mainly because their fee structure for larger holdings around the $200k mark was just *slightly* more favorable for me as a Tampa resident. Augusta's customer service was solid, don't get me wrong, but for the long haul, Equity Trust felt like a better fit for my specific portfolio size and investment horizon. Always pays to compare those annual fees closely, especially with some of these companies.

This is a great thread, super helpful to see everyone's experiences. I'm with APMEX for my gold and silver, and while their storage fees seem competitive enough for the quantity I'm holding (about $750k right now), I'm curious if anyone has had to deal with *selling* a portion of their assets with them. Specifically, how smooth is their liquidation process for partial sales? I eventually plan to draw down over retirement and want to avoid any surprises.

Glad to see this thread. Been wondering about others' experiences myself. I rolled over about 75k from an old 401k into a gold IRA with Augusta Precious Metals about two years ago, primarily for the tax advantages and as a hedge against inflation. The process was surprisingly smooth for a 401k rollover, and their team walked me through all the precious metals options. So far, no complaints, and it's comforting to know a portion of my retirement savings is in something tangible.

Honestly, it was a bit of a journey for me. Started looking into this back in late 2020, right when the market felt like it was doing a rollercoaster impression. After getting some recommendations from my financial advisor here in Atlanta – great guy, by the way, always steers me right – I ended up going with Augusta Precious Metals. Their educational resources were top-notch, really helped me understand the whole process of rolling over part of my old 401k without feeling pressured into anything. The setup for my $150k gold IRA was surprisingly smooth, and their communication has been excellent ever since.

This thread is super timely for me. I just rolled over about $300k from an old 401k into a Gold IRA with Augusta Precious Metals last month, and honestly, the process felt a bit overwhelming. The whole "direct rollover" vs. "indirect" part had my head spinning, even with their reps guiding me. What kind of questions did you all wish you'd asked your custodians *before* signing up, especially regarding storage and fees? I'm in Lexington, KY, and still trying to wrap my head around everything.

@Joshua Phillips - Thanks for bringing up the fee point; it's honestly something I probably took for granted after my initial setup a few years back. When I was first setting up my Gold IRA out here in Boston, storage fees were a huge factor in choosing Augusta Precious Metals, alongside their reputation for transparency. Glad to hear it's still top of mind for folks, especially with everything else fluctuating.

I've been with ***Equity Trust*** for about three years now and my experience has been pretty smooth for my modest, sub-$50k gold IRA. Their platform isn't the flashiest, but honestly, it's reliable, and their customer service reps (especially the one I got during my initial rollover from a 401k) were super helpful walking me through the process and the annual fee structure. For someone like me in Columbus, looking for stability over bells and whistles, they've been a solid choice.
