My 5-year Gold IRA experience - pretty happy with how it's going, but wondering about future allocation

Hard to believe it's been five years since I first dove into the Gold IRA world. Back in 2019, fresh off a decent funding round for my last startup, I decided to pull the trigger. Had about $700k in my portfolio then, and the market felt... squirrelly, to say the least. Everyone was talking about a recession, and I just had this gut feeling I needed something tangible outside of tech stocks. So, after a ton of research and talking to a few advisors here in Austin, I rolled over about $150k into a Gold IRA. Pretty sure I bought a mix of American Gold Eagles and some Gold Buffalos then.

My main goal wasn't chasing astronomical returns, honestly. It was purely a hedge. I just wanted some stability, some peace of mind that if everything else went sideways, I wouldn't lose everything. And in that regard, it's totally delivered. I haven't tracked the exact percentage gains down to the decimal, but it's easily up 30-40% since I bought it, maybe even more with the recent run-up. The peace of mind alone has been worth it, especially through some of the crazier market swings we've seen. Plus, knowing it's sitting securely in a vault, not just digits on a screen, feels good.

Now, I'm sitting on a portfolio closer to $900k, and with the current economic climate, I'm starting to wonder if I should double down on my precious metals allocation. My current Gold IRA is probably around 15-20% of my total portfolio. I've been eyeing some silver coins lately, thinking about broadening the physical metals exposure. Part of me is just so bullish on gold right now, but diversification within the metals seems smart too.

For those of you with longer-term gold IRA experience, especially if you're holding a significant portion, what are your thoughts on increasing allocation right now? And any particular types of silver coins you'd recommend looking into for an IRA? I'm curious to hear other people's strategies and how they're feeling about the next 3-5 years.

Interesting take. I've heard the opposite from a few people though — would love to see some actual numbers on this.

Interesting read! Glad it's working out for you. While I get the appeal of gold as a hedge, especially when things feel uncertain, putting such a significant chunk of your portfolio into a single asset class, even a historically stable one, always makes me a little antsy. Diversification is key after all. Have you considered exploring other alternative assets for future allocation to balance things out, or is gold still your primary focus for that portion of your wealth?

Totally get this. I'm coming up on my 4-year mark with my Gold IRA, and honestly, glad I made the move too. My situation was a bit different – I inherited a chunk of change and felt super uneasy leaving it all in stocks given the volatile market at the time. Diversifying into gold felt like a no-brainer then, and I haven't regretted it.

My allocation is pretty similar to yours actually. I'm also starting to think about whether to rebalance or just let it ride for a bit longer. Good problem to have, I guess!

That's great to hear about your positive experience! Five years is a solid track record. You mentioned the market felt "squirrelly" back in 2019 – what specifically about the market at that time made you decide to get into a Gold IRA rather than other traditional safe-haven assets?

Hey, glad to hear your Gold IRA is working out! Five years is a good chunk of time. Regarding future allocation, have you looked into what other precious metals might be worth considering? Sometimes people focus solely on gold, but silver, platinum, or palladium can offer different risk/reward profiles and further diversification.

There are some good resources out there comparing the long-term performance and market drivers of different precious metals for IRA inclusion. Might be worth a quick read to see if anything else aligns with your current investment goals. Good luck!

My advisor told me 10-15% in gold is the sweet spot but I went heavier. We'll see how it plays out.

Been looking into this myself — the fees on some of these custodians are wild. Anyone found one that doesn't gouge you?

I keep going back and forth between gold and silver allocations. The gold-to-silver ratio right now is making silver look attractive.
