Okay, so I'm a young professional here in Charleston, and I've been seriously looking into diversifying my retirement portfolio. Everyone always talks about traditional stocks and bonds, but something about the stability of physical assets, especially gold, really resonates with me right now. I've got about $20k in various investments so far, mostly ETFs and some individual stocks, and I’m looking to start dedicating a portion of new contributions to an IRA, specifically a Gold IRA.
I’ve done a decent amount of online research, and it seems like there are a lot of companies out there, all making big claims. It’s a bit overwhelming trying to figure out who's legit and who’s just trying to push metal. My main goal is long-term growth and protection against inflation, not necessarily trying to swing big for short-term gains. I’m thinking of starting with a smaller allocation, maybe $5k-$10k, and then adding to it consistently over the next few years as my income grows. I'd love to hear from anyone who's actually gone through the process.
What were your experiences with different custodians or dealers? Are there any hidden fees or common pitfalls I should be extra wary of? I keep seeing ads for "free silver," which immediately makes me suspicious, but then again, who doesn't like free things? Is it worth going with a local Charleston dealer, or are the larger national companies generally better for Gold IRAs?
Any advice on how to vet a company, or what specific questions I should be asking before I commit, would be hugely appreciated. I'm trying to be smart about this early on so I don't have regrets down the line. Thanks in advance for any insights!
