Okay, so I'm seriously considering putting about 10-15% of my portfolio into a Gold IRA. I've been eyeing this for a while, especially with all the tech stock volatility lately. My main portfolio is doing pretty well, but I've got upwards of $500k in various ventures and I just want some solid, tangible stability. We're talking late 40s here, living in Austin, and while the startup life is great, the market swings can be genuinely stressful sometimes.
I've done some research, obviously. Heard about Augusta Precious Metals, Birch Gold, etc. Seems like there are a lot of players, and honestly, a lot of them sound pretty similar on the surface. What are the key things to look out for when choosing a custodian? I know about fees – storage, setup, annual contributions – but are there any red flags I should be actively scanning for? I'm trying to avoid getting myself into a situation with hidden costs or aggressive sales tactics.
Also, silver coins... I see a lot of talk about them in Gold IRAs. Is it generally better to stick to just gold, or is there a strong argument for including silver? My initial thought was purely gold for that traditional hedge, but I'm open to being swayed if people have had good experiences. I'm looking for long-term growth and protection, not trying to day trade my precious metals.
Anyone in a similar boat, or who's been through this process recently, have any wisdom to share? What was your experience like? Any particular companies or strategies you'd recommend (or warn against)? Really appreciate any insights here, feeling a bit out of my depth with the specifics.
