Took me the better part of two years, but I finally got my wife fully on board with the Platinum IRA. For context, I’ve had a significant portion of my portfolio in physical gold and silver for years – I'm talking a seven-figure allocation that's been doing its job admirably. But when I brought up diversifying within precious metals, specifically moving a chunk of our regular IRA into a self-directed Platinum IRA, she was surprisingly resistant.
Her main concerns, and I think these are pretty typical, revolved around liquidity ("What if we need that money now?"), storage ("Isn't it just sitting in a vault somewhere earning nothing?"), and frankly, a bit of skepticism about platinum itself ("Is it really as good as gold?"). I tried the logical approach first, showing her the historical performance, industrial demand, and the supply/demand dynamics that make platinum such an intriguing play, especially at current prices. That didn’t quite cut it.
What finally moved the needle was focusing on the wealth preservation aspect and explaining it through the lens of generational wealth. We're both retired now, and our kids and grandkids are a significant part of our planning. I framed it as a prudent, long-term hedge against the ongoing currency debasement and a way to truly diversify our overall portfolio beyond just stocks and bonds. I also brought up inflation, not just as a buzzword, but how it directly impacts the purchasing power of our conventional retirement accounts over decades. Showed her some charts comparing platinum to the dollar over the last 50 years. That really seemed to resonate – the idea that this isn't about getting rich quick, but about preserving what we already have for the future. We ended up moving about $750k into physical platinum coins within the IRA.
Has anyone else had to "convince" their spouse on a specific precious metal allocation? What arguments or perspectives really clicked with them? I'm curious what strategies worked for others in similar situations.
