Just wanted to share a little something that's been making me smile this week. For about 8 years now, I've had a portion of my retirement savings in a Gold IRA. I'm an insurance agent here in Omaha, and I always preach diversification to my clients, so it only made sense to practice what I preach. It's not my only retirement vehicle β I've got mutual funds, some real estate stuff, the works. But I initially put about 15% of my then roughly $100k portfolio into gold, just as a hedge against inflation and market volatility.
There were definitely times, especially in the middle of that stretch, where I thought, "Ugh, is this thing ever going to move?" It felt like a bit of a drag compared to some of my other investments that were doing well. But I stuck with it, honestly mostly because I just decided it was a long-term play and I wouldn't touch it. Fast forward to now, with my total portfolio hovering around the $220k mark, and that gold portion has just been steadily chugging along. Itβs not going to make me a millionaire overnight, but seeing how it's performed during some of the economic jitters lately has been a real confidence booster.
I feel like it's really shown its strength as a reliable store of value, which is exactly what I wanted it for. Itβs a great feeling to know that even when other parts of my portfolio are having an off day, the gold is sitting there, doing its thing. It's really reinforced my belief in having a balanced approach to retirement planning. Any other long-term gold holders out there feeling good about their decision recently?
Are you guys mostly doing physical gold, or are you in ETFs/mutual funds? I went with physical for the IRA, seemed like the most direct route.
