Eagles vs. Buffalos for a new silver stacker - what's the real deal?
- •I'm wanting to diversify a bit, maybe put $5-10k into silver sometime this year, and I'm leaning heavily towards one of these two.
- •I get the collector appeal of the Eagles, especially the newer designs.
- •But honestly, as a stacker, I'm more interested in the raw silver content and liquidity down the road.
Okay, so I've been seeing a lot of back and forth on American Silver Eagles versus American Gold Buffalos, but I'm looking at this from a silver stacking perspective for my new silver holdings. I've already got my gold IRA squared away (mostly Eagles there, happy with that decision for the long haul), but now I'm looking to add some physical silver to my overall portfolio beyond my IRA. I'm wanting to diversify a bit, maybe put $5-10k into silver sometime this year, and I'm leaning heavily towards one of these two.
I get the collector appeal of the Eagles, especially the newer designs. I'm a principal here in Little Rock, and we actually touch on supply and demand in our financial literacy classes, so I understand how mintage numbers and design changes can affect premiums. But honestly, as a stacker, I'm more interested in the raw silver content and liquidity down the road. The premium on Eagles seems to always be a sticking point for folks.
On the other hand, the Buffalos feel more... well, pure somehow? No offense to the Eagles, but the Buffalo design just feels more classic and less prone to annual variations that might complicate things. My primary goal here isn't collecting, it's preserving wealth and having a physical asset that's easily recognizable and tradable. For smaller investments like this, is the higher premium on Eagles really worth it for potential resale, or does the lower premium (generally) on Buffalos make them a smarter play for a new silver stacker focused on ounces for ounces?
I know some people swear by one over the other for various reasons. For those of you who have tried both, or who primarily stack one over the other, what have you found regarding resale ease and realized value when you've sold? I'm trying to teach my students about making informed decisions, and I want to walk the talk here. Any insights from fellow stackers would be greatly appreciated!
