Alright folks, another day, another debate heating up here: American Gold Eagles vs. American Gold Buffalos for a Gold IRA. I’ve been in the gold game for a good 15 years now, started back when my kids were still in elementary school, and I've seen a few cycles. Currently sitting on a portfolio comfortable between 500k and 1M, mostly in gold and some legacy oil investments here in Dallas that are finally starting to look green again after a rough patch. For my IRA, it's always been a mix, but I'm thinking about rebalancing a bit.
My preference has generally leaned towards the Eagles. That 22K alloy with the copper makes them a bit more durable, and honestly, the fractional options are super handy when you’re looking to diversify or even sell off smaller chunks if you need to. The premiums are usually a little lower, too, which always helps when you’re acquiring larger amounts. But lately, I’ve been eyeing the Buffalos, especially with all the talk about purity. That 24K pure gold is tempting, especially if you believe, as I often do, that in a truly SHTF scenario, purity might command a slightly higher premium from certain buyers. I’m torn because while 22K has always felt "good enough," the Buffalos just feel more like pure wealth storage.
I’ve always kept a close eye on how gold performs against other assets, especially the stock market. For those of you who haven't seen it, the Gold vs Stocks Comparison tool is pretty neat for looking at different timeframes. Over the last 10 years, it’s been a wild ride for both, but gold has certainly held its own during some shaky periods that really made me glad I wasn't 100% in equities. My point is, I'm trying to optimize for long-term stability and maximizing my gold's intrinsic value, not just chasing collector premiums.
So, for those of you also investing in Gold IRAs, what’s your primary rationale for choosing Eagles or Buffalos? Are you factoring in potential resale scenarios more heavily? Or is it purely about the metal content itself? I’m leaning towards adding more Buffalos just for that 24K purity, but I'd love to hear some counterarguments or reinforcement of my Eagles preference before I make any moves. What's your take?
