Diversifying 401k with Gold - My Experience (and a question for you all)

Thought I'd share my experience diversifying my 401k into a Gold IRA, especially with all the talk about inflation and market volatility lately. I'm a doctor here in Boston, and up until about three years ago, my retirement portfolio (which is in the high six figures, closer to a million with everything combined) was pretty much 100% in various equities and bonds through my hospital's 401k plan. Always felt a little uneasy just having everything tied up there, especially after seeing a few dips, so I started looking into alternatives.
The process of rolling over a portion of my 401k into a self-directed Gold IRA wasn't as complicated as I initially thought. I ended up moving about 10-15% of my total portfolio, which for me felt like a comfortable amount to have in a physical asset without over-committing. I spent a good month researching different custodians and gold dealers, comparing fees and storage options. Ended up going with a reputable firm that stores the gold in a secure vault out of state. It wasn't a quick overnight thing, but the peace of mind knowing I have a tangible hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty is huge.
My reasoning was pretty straightforward: I already have a significant amount exposed to the stock market, real estate (my house here in Newton), and bonds. Gold just felt like a logical next step to truly diversify and protect against a potential downturn. I’m not looking to get rich quick with gold; it's more about capital preservation and having that extra layer of security. The recent spikes have been nice, but honestly, that's just a bonus.
I'm curious to hear from others who've done something similar. What percentage of your portfolio did you allocate to physical gold? And for those of you who've been in Gold IRAs for longer than me, what are your thoughts on rebalancing? Have you ever considered cashing out a portion during a peak, or are you just holding for the long haul?
