Hey everyone, just read this article about LG&E, Kentucky Utilities, and X-energy teaming up to explore small modular reactors (SMRs). Very interesting stuff! It sounds like they're still in the early feasibility stages, which is to be expected with this kind of tech, but it’s definitely something I've been keeping an eye on for a while.
My initial thought goes straight to the long-term energy transition. As someone eyeing retirement in the next 15-20 years, I'm always looking at industries that are going to be critical for the future, and energy is obviously a huge one. SMRs feel like they could be a real game-changer for reliable, clean power, and seeing utilities actually moving forward with exploring deployment is encouraging. It makes me wonder if this will accelerate the investment opportunities in the nuclear sector, beyond just the big players I typically look at. I've got a small position in a few renewable energy ETFs, but I've been hesitant to dive deep into nuclear due to the historical baggage and regulatory hurdles, but SMRs seem to address some of those concerns.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you think SMRs are a realistic part of our energy future, especially in the US, or are we still years away from widespread adoption? And more importantly, from an investment perspective, are you looking at any specific companies that are leading the SMR charge that I should be researching? Always good to hear what the community is thinking on these high-potential but high-risk plays!
