Hey everyone,
Just read this article – GBM aims to reopen Ontario's Kearney graphite mine – and it definitely caught my eye. The idea of reopening a graphite mine like Kearney, which closed way back in '94, is pretty fascinating. 23,000 tonnes annually starting in 2028 is a decent chunk, especially with the surging demand for graphite in EV batteries and other tech. As someone who's been slowly building out a position in the EV supply chain for a while now, primarily through some lithium and nickel plays, this definitely makes me think about diversifying into graphite a bit more. I've been eyeing a few junior miners, but the prospect of a more established, albeit dormant, mine getting a new lease on life has its own appeal. Less exploration risk, perhaps?
It brings up a lot of questions for me, both as an investor and just generally thinking about our domestic supply chains. We're all aware of the push to secure critical minerals closer to home, and graphite is absolutely on that list. For my retirement portfolio, I'm trying to balance growth with some security, and companies that are genuinely contributing to North American independence in these materials feel like a good bet for the long term. My kids are growing up in a world that's going to be increasingly electrified, so investing in this space feels like I'm doing a small part for their future too, not just my own.
What are your thoughts on this? Does anyone here have experience with investing in these "reopening" situations? Are there specific challenges or upsides you look for? Would love to hear from anyone else who's been following the graphite market closely!
