I’ve been eyeing up some new custodians for my Gold IRA and running into a bit of a wall trying to gauge what's considered competitive for fees. I’m currently with Augusta Precious Metals (been pretty happy with them overall), but my annual custodian fee with Equity Trust has me wondering if I could do better elsewhere. Right now, I'm paying around $225-$250 a year, and that feels... fine? But "fine" isn't always "best," especially as my holdings grow.
My current portfolio is sitting just north of $150k, mostly in bullion, and it's a mix of different types of coins. I'm a healthcare administrator here in Tampa, so I appreciate stability and a clear fee structure – no surprise charges. I've been investing in gold pretty steadily over the past five years or so, gradually building up my allocation. I'm not looking to move things around every other week, but annual fees can definitely eat into returns over the long haul.
I’ve seen some places advertise flat fees, while others have tiered percentages. What kind of fee structure do you all prefer? Are there any hidden fees I should really be digging into? I’m trying to avoid a scenario where a lower upfront fee blinds me to some other significant cost down the line. For those of you with portfolios in the $100k - $250k range, what are you typically paying in custodian fees? Are there any custodians or even specific companies (like Goldco or Birch Gold Group) whose preferred custodians stand out for being particularly fair on fees?
I know storage fees are a separate beast, but I'm primarily focused on the custodian side for now. Any insights or war stories (good or bad) would be super helpful in my research. Just trying to make sure I’m not leaving money on the table unnecessarily.
