Okay, so I'm trying to wrap my head around these custodian fees for my Platinum IRA. I've been in the steel game my whole life, so I get commodities, I get storage, I get value. But these custodian fees feel a bit like a black box sometimes. I've got a decent chunk of my retirement in platinum – probably around $350k or so – and I'm feeling like I might be overpaying for my current custodian. They're charging a flat annual fee, which sounds good in theory, but when you do the math, it feels a bit steep for just holding a few bars of metal.
I'm based out of Birmingham, and I've been with the same outfit for about five years now. Good folks, no complaints about service, but I'm thinking it's time to shop around and make sure I'm not leaving money on the table. Are any of you guys seeing genuinely competitive rates for Platinum IRAs, especially on the custodian side? I'm not just talking about the initial setup, but the recurring annual fees, storage, insurance, all that jazz. I'm keen to hear specifically if anyone's using custodians that offer a percentage-based fee structure instead of flat rates for larger portfolios, and if that's actually working out better in practice.
I'm trying to figure out if it's even worth the hassle of transferring everything over. I know there can be some hoops to jump through, and I’m definitely not looking for some fly-by-night operation. I deal with enough volatile markets in my day job, I want my retirement to be as stable as possible, even down to the fees. What kind of annual averages are you all seeing? And are there any specific questions I should be asking potential new custodians that I might be overlooking? Any advice would be appreciated, especially from folks who’ve done a transfer themselves. Thanks!
