Hey everyone, Dorothy Lopez here from sunny Las Vegas! Hope you're all having a good week. I've been a silent reader on this forum for a while now, soaking up all the great advice, but wanted to jump in with a topic that's been on my mind: custodian fees for our Gold IRAs.
My Gold IRA is sitting comfortably between $100k-$250k, and I've been with the same custodian since I rolled over a good chunk of my 401k a few years back. Working in the casino industry for decades, you learn a thing or two about risk management and "the house always wins," so I'm hyper-aware of fees chipping away at my savings. When I first set up my account, I felt like I did my due diligence, but now I'm wondering if I'm leaving money on the table. I'm currently paying around $250 annually, which feels... okay, but is it great? I'm getting closer to retirement, and every dollar counts, especially with what my kids tell me about inflation these days!
I remember talking to another investor friend of mine, also in Vegas, who mentioned he's paying closer to $195 for an even larger account. That got me thinking. My goal with this Gold IRA was always long-term stability and protecting my family's future – a real hedge against the unpredictable. But unexpected fees can eat into that protection. So, my question to all of you is: What are you paying for custodian fees? Are there any hidden gems out there with lower flat fees, or do most of you find the percentage-based fees more appealing as your account grows?
I'd love to hear your experiences. Have any of you successfully negotiated lower fees with your current custodian? Or have you switched custodians strictly for fee reasons? Any specific companies you'd recommend looking into (or avoiding)? Just trying to make sure I'm doing right by my retirement stack. Thanks in advance for any insights!
