Figured I'd share my experience with Augusta Precious Metals, specifically with silver coins. My wife and I have been looking at diversifying a good chunk of our retirement savings – we’re both pushing 60 and after seeing what happened to my pension in the early 2000s, I’m a bit gun-shy about having too much in just stocks and bonds. We've got about $700k in our overall portfolio right now, and decided to move roughly $150k of that into a Gold IRA, with a decent chunk going to silver.
Went with Augusta after doing a fair bit of research online and talking to a few different companies. What sold me on them was their transparency and the feeling that they weren't just trying to upsell me on everything under the sun. Felt like a straight shooter, which for a guy who’s spent 30 years in dairy, means a lot. The process itself for setting up the IRA and rolling over funds was pretty darn smooth. Honestly, I expected more headaches, but their team walked us through it all. We ended up putting about 40k into silver, mostly American Silver Eagles and some Canadian Maples.
Now, as for the actual silver, it's all in the depository. I haven't held most of it in my hand, obviously, which is a bit different for me. But I do get regular statements, and everything looks above board. The prices felt fair at the time of purchase, and I appreciate the clarity on fees – no hidden surprises, which I've heard some other companies are guilty of. I'm keeping a close eye on how these holdings perform, especially with all the talk about inflation. It’s hard to predict anything these days, but having a tangible asset feels right.
One thing I’m still mulling over is the future tax implications. I used that Tax Calculator tool a few times to get a rough idea, but it’s still something that keeps me up at night occasionally. Anyone else out there in a similar boat, especially with silver? What are your long-term expectations for these types of holdings versus traditional stocks? Curious to hear from others who have gone this route.
