Anyone use Equity Trust for their Gold IRA? Or have other

    Key Takeaways
    • Let me tell you, that recession really spooked me, and as a retired teacher here in Phoenix, I just couldn't risk my nest egg dwindling away again.
    • Gold felt like the safest bet, and so far, so good – my 150k or so in precious metals has held its own, much better than the market has at times.
    • Overall, Equity Trust has been… fine.
    The 3-step rollover process explained

Okay, so I’ve been with Equity Trust for my Gold IRA for a while now, probably close to 10 years, ever since I transferred my old 403(b) over after the 2008 crash. Let me tell you, that recession really spooked me, and as a retired teacher here in Phoenix, I just couldn't risk my nest egg dwindling away again. Gold felt like the safest bet, and so far, so good – my 150k or so in precious metals has held its own, much better than the market has at times. Overall, Equity Trust has been… fine. Nothing spectacular, nothing terrible. Just, y’know, fine.

But lately, I’ve been wondering if there’s something better out there. Their fees seem a little high when I actually sit down and crunch the numbers, and sometimes getting through to a real person feels like a bit of a maze. I’m not exactly a tech whiz, so the online portal can be a bit clunky for me. I’m thinking about potentially moving some of my platinum holdings around (yes, I diversified a bit beyond just gold, felt like a smart move then, still do mostly!).

Has anyone here had particularly good (or bad!) experiences with other Gold IRA custodians? I'm curious about fees, customer service, ease of setting things up or moving assets around, that kind of thing. I also want to make sure I'm still eligible for a Gold IRA if I were to switch – I remember using an "Eligibility Checker" tool when I first set mine up, something like this one, and it was super helpful. Are there any custodians that specifically stand out for platinum or other less common precious metals?

Any insights from you seasoned investors would be greatly appreciated. Just trying to make sure I’m being smart with my retirement funds here in my golden years!

@Frank Rivera – Good to hear you’ve had a positive experience with Augusta. I actually did a 401k rollover into a gold IRA with Equity Trust myself about four years ago, and I’ve been quite happy with them. The process was super smooth, especially coming from a traditional tech-heavy portfolio here in Chicago. The peace of mind knowing a portion of my retirement savings is in precious metals, shielded by those tax advantages, is just invaluable, especially with current market volatility.

Hey, totally get the 2008 spook! I had a similar situation, though not a teacher. After that whole mess, I moved a good chunk of my old 401k into a gold IRA, and I also went with Equity Trust. Been with them for about 7 years now, and honestly, no complaints. Their customer service has always been pretty responsive for me, and the setup was much smoother than I anticipated back then. Glad to hear it's working out for you too!

Interesting! It sounds like Equity Trust has been a good fit for you for a long time. When you say "transferred my old 403(b) over," did you do a direct rollover, or was it a more complex process?

Hey, I hear you on the post-2008 jitters! It definitely made a lot of people rethink their portfolios. While Equity Trust is a pretty common name in the IRA custodian space, and it sounds like they've served you well, it might be worth a quick look at some of the newer players if you're ever feeling an itch to compare. It’s been 10 years, and the landscape for precious metals IRAs has definitely evolved a bit. Just a thought!

Equity Trust is a solid custodian, definitely one of the bigger players. I've been with Augusta Precious Metals for my Gold IRA since 2015, and their transparency and communication have been top-notch – especially important when you've got a significant chunk of your retirement in physical metals. Always worth checking out a few options before locking in, especially if you're planning on a larger transfer.

Equity Trust has been solid for me since '08. Their fee structure is pretty transparent, which I appreciate, especially when you're moving substantial amounts of metal. Another option I've used for some diversification, particularly for *physical* gold I like to keep closer, is Augusta Precious Metals; they also offer IRA services, but I've mainly used them for direct purchases. The key is finding a custodian whose storage options and audit trails make you comfortable.

I've heard mixed reviews about Equity Trust, mostly about their fee structure. Have you looked into how their storage fees compare to other custodians, especially for larger holdings? I'm trying to figure out if the administrative burden for tracking those fees outweighs any perceived benefits. By the way, if you're near retirement like I am out here in Dublin, OH, the RMD Calculator is super helpful for planning.

I've been with Equity Trust for about 12 years now, since I first started rolling over my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Their fees for storage in Delaware were definitely competitive back then, and I've appreciated their responsiveness whenever I've added more to my holdings, which has been pretty consistently every 18-24 months. For someone in Nebraska like me, having a solid, dependable custodian that isn't some fly-by-night operation was always the priority.

Nah, I went with Augusta Precious Metals for my Gold IRA a few years back, after seeing them featured on those financial news shows. My old IRA was mostly in tech, which was great for a while, but living in Honolulu, the cost of everything just keeps climbing, and I started thinking about diversifying away from just paper assets. I rolled over about 300k into physical gold and silver, and the process with Augusta was smooth, from the initial consultation to getting the metals securely stored at the Delaware Depository. It gave me a lot more peace of mind, especially with all the economic uncertainty globally.

I’ve been with New Direction Trust Company for my Gold IRA for the past seven years, after a messy experience with a local Detroit-based firm that frankly just wasn't equipped for the scale of precious metals. The fees are competitive, but more importantly, their client service for someone holding a significant metals allocation (let's just say it's a solid six-figure chunk of my portfolio) has been consistently top-notch. I specifically appreciate their deep understanding of various storage options and the nuanced tax implications, which was a huge relief compared to the boilerplate responses I got elsewhere when trying to roll over my old 401k.

Equity Trust is definitely a common one, but I went with Augusta Precious Metals for my gold IRA back in 2020 when I did a 401k rollover. Their customer service out of Beverly Hills was top-notch, walking me through all the paperwork. The tax advantages alone on those precious metals make it a no-brainer for a chunk of my retirement savings, especially living in Portland with our state income tax!

@Frank Rivera That's really interesting, especially about Augusta. I'm actually in Tampa myself and just starting to dip my toes into the whole gold IRA thing. My current IRA is also heavily tech-focused, and while it's been good, the recent volatility has me seriously considering diversifying into something more stable. I'm looking at moving around $150k-$200k over, so I'm trying to make sure I pick a reputable custodian. Did you look at many others before settling on Augusta, or did the news features just seal the deal for you?
