I've been seeing a lot of posts about folks with really large gold IRAs, which is awesome for them, but it got me thinking. I started my Birch Gold IRA a couple of years ago with about $60k, mainly because I'm a nurse here in Seattle and retirement security is constantly on my mind. I'm not looking to get rich quick, just protect some of my savings from the crazy inflation we've been seeing. I figure having some physical gold outside the stock market is a pretty solid move.
My experience with Birch has actually been pretty good for my account size. I know some people worry about fees with smaller accounts, but honestly, it hasn't felt prohibitive for me. Their specialists were super patient, explained everything about setting up the account, choosing a custodian (I went with Equity Trust), and the whole storage process. I ended up getting a mix of American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maple Leafs. It really felt like they weren't pushing me into anything I didn't understand, and the whole process was surprisingly smooth, even for someone like me who’s not really a financial whiz.
The only thing I sometimes wonder about is if there are better options out there for accounts in my range (currently sitting around $70k with some market gains). I mean, Birch Gold has been perfectly fine, and their customer service is great, but you always hear about different companies. Has anyone else here in the ~$50k-$100k range used Birch Gold or switched to another provider they really liked? What were your reasons?
I'm content with my decision, especially seeing the stability in my precious metals while the rest of my portfolio has had its ups and downs. It definitely gives me some peace of mind heading into my fifties. Just curious about other people's experiences with similar-sized accounts.
