Anyone else eyeing platinum? Seems cheap...
- •I've been watching platinum lately and it feels like it's seriously undervalued right now, especially compared to gold and even palladium.
- •I retired from the auto industry here in Detroit a while back, and my mantra has always been long-term value.
- •Gold has been a rock, absolutely no regrets there, but my gut is telling me platinum could be that next big play.
I've been watching platinum lately and it feels like it's seriously undervalued right now, especially compared to gold and even palladium. As someone who’s had a decent chunk of my portfolio (talking a good 500k-1M, mostly in precious metals) in gold for over 20 years, I’m always looking for the next intelligent move. I retired from the auto industry here in Detroit a while back, and my mantra has always been long-term value. Gold has been a rock, absolutely no regrets there, but my gut is telling me platinum could be that next big play.
Historically, platinum has often traded at a premium to gold, and now it's still significantly below. Yeah, I know the ESG push against ICE vehicles is a factor since catalytic converters are a big use case, but there's also the industrial demand for things like hydrogen tech and even jewelry. Are we underestimating the bounce-back or the new industrial demand drivers? I remember back in the early 2000s, I saw platinum hit over $2,000 an ounce; seeing it where it is now just feels… off. It’s making me think about rebalancing some of my gold holdings or at least dipping my toes in with a dedicated platinum IRA.
I’m curious what other long-term PM investors are thinking. Is this genuinely an opportunity, or am I just looking at it through rose-tinted glasses because I loved a good bargain back in my auto parts days? Anyone here moved into platinum recently? What’s your conviction level? I’m happy with my gold, but a significant undervaluation is tough to ignore, especially when you've got decades of experience seeing these cycles play out. Part of me is just itching to diversify a bit more.
