Anyone done a 401k to Gold IRA rollover recently? Timeline surprises?

    Key Takeaways
    • Seriously considering rolling over a good chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, maybe even some platinum too since I’m already looking at that.
    • My main question is around the actual timeline for a direct rollover.
    • I’ve read online that it can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, which is a pretty wide range.

Seriously considering rolling over a good chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, maybe even some platinum too since I’m already looking at that. I left my last tech exec gig about six months ago here in SF and decided to take a bit of a sabbatical, which is why I’m finally getting around to sorting out these retirement accounts. I’ve still got roughly $350k chilling in a brokerage account from the 401k, just sitting in some Vanguard ETFs, but with all the uncertainty around inflation and what Silicon Valley is doing these days, I'm feeling less confident in that exposure.

My main question is around the actual timeline for a direct rollover. I’ve read online that it can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, which is a pretty wide range. Has anyone here gone through this recently? Specifically, from a traditional 401k to a self-directed Gold IRA? What kind of snags did you hit, if any? I’m trying to plan this out so I don't have capital tied up for too long, especially if I want to make a move on some platinum or palladium while prices are decent.

I’m working with a reputable custodian (or at least they seem reputable – doing my due diligence, obviously) and I've got my eye on some specific bullion. Just trying to set realistic expectations for when I can actually see those shiny assets in my account. Any insights into how long the funds actually took to transfer, or how long it took for the physical metals to be delivered to the depository once the funds landed? Was your original 401k provider particularly slow or difficult to deal with?

Hey, I hear you! I actually just finished up a rollover myself a few months back, though it was from a traditional IRA, not a 401k. The platinum part is interesting, I focused mainly on gold and silver. My timeline was a bit longer than I expected, probably a full 4-5 weeks from initial contact to having the metals in the depository account. There was a decent amount of paperwork and a couple of phone calls to follow up on things. Definitely start early if you have a specific deadline in mind!

Interesting you're looking at platinum too, given the current market. While it's definitely an option with some custodians, it might be worth a deeper dive into its long-term performance vs. gold, especially if one of your main goals is wealth preservation. Gold has a much longer and more consistent track record as a safe haven asset compared to platinum, which can be more volatile due to its industrial demand. Just something to consider before going all-in on another metal.

Interesting! When you say "platinum too," are you talking about including platinum coins/bars directly in the Gold IRA alongside the gold, or are you looking at a separate precious metals IRA for platinum specifically? Just curious how that works with the same custodian.

Hey, cool you're looking into this! A lot of people forget about the "indirect" rollover option, especially with the 60-day rule. If you do that, make sure you know the exact deadline and don't miss it, or you'll be looking at taxes and penalties. The direct trustee-to-trustee transfer is usually simpler and avoids that headache altogether.

Also, don't forget to check out the fees involved with different custodians. They can vary a *lot* for precious metals IRAs. Sites like ConsumerAffairs (just one example, do your own research!) often have good comparisons of different companies and their fee structures. Good luck!

Yeah, I totally agree with this. Just finished my own Gold IRA rollover about 3-4 weeks ago (from an old 401k too, coincidentally). The actual transfer part for the funds was way faster than I expected, like within a week. But then getting the physical metals to me took another 10 days or so. I was expecting the whole thing to be a month-plus process, so it was a pleasant surprise all around.

My advisor told me 10-15% in gold is the sweet spot but I went heavier. We'll see how it plays out.

Ngl I came here expecting the usual affiliate spam but the discussions are actually decent. Way better info than what I was getting from my old advisor.
