Anyone done a 401k to Gold IRA rollover recently? Timeline surprises?
- •Seriously considering rolling over a good chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, maybe even some platinum too since I’m already looking at that.
- •My main question is around the actual timeline for a direct rollover.
- •I’ve read online that it can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, which is a pretty wide range.
Seriously considering rolling over a good chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, maybe even some platinum too since I’m already looking at that. I left my last tech exec gig about six months ago here in SF and decided to take a bit of a sabbatical, which is why I’m finally getting around to sorting out these retirement accounts. I’ve still got roughly $350k chilling in a brokerage account from the 401k, just sitting in some Vanguard ETFs, but with all the uncertainty around inflation and what Silicon Valley is doing these days, I'm feeling less confident in that exposure.
My main question is around the actual timeline for a direct rollover. I’ve read online that it can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, which is a pretty wide range. Has anyone here gone through this recently? Specifically, from a traditional 401k to a self-directed Gold IRA? What kind of snags did you hit, if any? I’m trying to plan this out so I don't have capital tied up for too long, especially if I want to make a move on some platinum or palladium while prices are decent.
I’m working with a reputable custodian (or at least they seem reputable – doing my due diligence, obviously) and I've got my eye on some specific bullion. Just trying to set realistic expectations for when I can actually see those shiny assets in my account. Any insights into how long the funds actually took to transfer, or how long it took for the physical metals to be delivered to the depository once the funds landed? Was your original 401k provider particularly slow or difficult to deal with?
