Hey everyone, first post here after lurking for a while. So I finally took the plunge and rolled over about $75k of my old 401(k) into a Gold IRA a few months back. Yeah, I know, should've done it sooner with the way inflation's been kicking everything around here in Nashville. Being in the music industry, things can be volatile, so having some real assets felt like a smart move. My advisor was all about the depository options, and that's where my gold is sitting right now, comfy and sound. But I keep thinking about home storage.
I mean, the appeal is obvious, right? Having physical possession of my metals. The idea of waking up and knowing that wealth is literally under my roof is pretty powerful. Not gonna lie, the fees for depository storage, while not astronomical, do add up over time. I used that Gold IRA Calculator tool to estimate how much I could save on those fees over the next 10-15 years, and it's not insignificant. My main concern is security, of course. I've got a decent home alarm system and thinking about a high-quality safe, but is that really enough for something like $75,000 in precious metals?
For those of you who do home storage for your Gold IRA, what was the process like? Any nightmares with audits or unforeseen complications? I've heard conflicting things about what's allowed and what isn't by the IRS. Did you set up a separate LLC for holding, or are you just relying on your self-directed IRA administrator to stay compliant? I'm trying to weigh the peace of mind of having it at home against the risks and potential headaches.
Is there anyone here who switched from depository to home storage and regretted it? Or vice-versa? Just looking for some real-world experiences beyond the sales pitches and official guidelines. Thanks in advance!
