Hey everyone, hoping to tap into the collective wisdom here. I'm hitting a bit of a crossroads on my next Gold IRA purchase and wanted to get some real-world opinions on American Gold Eagles vs. American Gold Buffalos. I've got about $30,000 allocated for this next bullion round, bringing my total gold holdings in the IRA to just over $300k. As a university professor, I tend to get pretty research-heavy, but sometimes the practical insight from those actually doing it is invaluable.
From a purely objective standpoint, both seem like solid choices. Eagles have that 22k durability with the copper and silver, and the Buffalos are 24k pure gold. I'm located in Richmond, VA, and access to reputable dealers for both isn't an issue. My main driver for this investment is long-term wealth preservation and inflation hedging, not really looking for quick flips (though who wouldn't mind an upside!). The numismatic value isn't a huge factor for me, but the liquidity and widespread recognition definitely are.
I'm leaning slightly towards the Buffalos for the pure gold content, thinking that might simplify things down the line if assaying or liquidation ever became a concern. However, I've heard some argue that the Eagle's alloy makes it more resilient to scratches and dings, which while not a massive deal since it's in an IRA vault, still gives me pause. Are premium differences really significant enough to sway a decision here? And for those who've bought either or both, did you find one easier to sell or more universally accepted when the time came?
My current portfolio is pretty diversified, so this gold allocation is really about that bedrock stability. Any thoughts, personal experiences, or even links to good comparisons would be greatly appreciated. Trying to make an informed decision and not just go with whatever my dealer has a slightly better deal on that day.
