Just crossed the five-year mark with my Gold IRA, and honestly, it’s been a pretty solid experience so far. Like a lot of government employees here in Albuquerque, I'm always looking for ways to supplement the pension, and after a ton of research back in late 2018, precious metals seemed like a no-brainer for diversification. Started with about $60k transferred over from an old 401k, mostly into American Eagles and Canadian Maples. Now I'm sitting closer to $85k, so definitely seeing some decent appreciation.
The initial setup was a bit more involved than just clicking a button, as I'm sure anyone who’s done a rollover knows. Had a couple of calls with the custodian to get everything squared away, and then the actual funding took about two weeks. The storage facility is in Delaware, which made me a little antsy at first, but knowing it's fully insured puts my mind at ease. I check in on the account value maybe once a month, just to see the trends, but I’m really in this for the long haul – thinking another 10-15 years at least, until retirement.
My main goal was always wealth preservation and hedging against inflation, which, let's be real, has been a significant concern these past few years. It’s comforting to know a portion of my retirement savings isn’t just sitting in paper assets. My wife was a bit skeptical at first, asking if we could just buy gold jewelry instead, haha, but she's seen the statements now and is on board. It’s not going to make me a millionaire overnight, but for stability and peace of mind, it’s been worth it.
Anyone else hit a significant milestone with their Gold IRA recently? What are your thoughts on the market for the next few years? I'm debating whether to add a bit more or just let it ride, especially with all the economic uncertainty out there. What's been your biggest surprise or learning since investing in precious metals for retirement?
