Just wanted to share my experience hitting the 5-year mark with my Gold IRA. It feels like yesterday I was stressing about inflation and the stock market being so volatile. As a school principal here in Little Rock, and someone who actually teaches financial literacy to high schoolers, I felt this huge responsibility to not just talk the talk, but walk the walk with my own investments. So, back in 2019, I decided to pull about $75,000 from some underperforming mutual funds and diversify into precious metals.
My main motivation was really capital preservation and a hedge against the kind of economic uncertainty we were seeing. I wasn't realistically expecting to get rich overnight, but I definitely wanted to see some steady growth. Looking back now, that $75k original investment has grown to roughly $105,000. That's a decent 40% return over five years, which I'm pretty happy with. Especially considering how crazy the world has been since early 2020!
What I've really appreciated is the stability it brought to my overall portfolio. When the stock market was doing its rollercoaster thing, my Gold IRA just… held strong. It wasn't immune to dips, of course, but it never gave me that gut-wrenching feeling some of my tech stocks did. It's been a great talking point with my students too, showing them real-world examples of diversification and alternative assets.
My main question for you all is for those who've been in longer: what's your long-term outlook? Am I being too conservative with my expectations? I'm thinking of adding another $10-15k this year, mainly because I still see a lot of global instability and inflation pressures. Anyone else in a similar boat, or have you made significant changes to your precious metal allocations recently?
