Hard to believe it's been five years since I first opened my Gold IRA. I remember being pretty nervous at the time, even with all my research. As an insurance agent here in Omaha, I see all sorts of investments and strategies, and while I keep a pretty diversified portfolio for my own retirement, the idea of tying up a decent chunk in physical gold felt... different. I started with about $100k back then, moving it over from some underperforming mutual funds. My rationale was really about hedging against inflation and general market volatility, especially with all the talk about quantitative easing back then. For me, it wasn’t about getting rich quick, but more about preservation.
So far, I'm pretty happy with how it's panned out. My initial $100k has grown to around $135k now, which isn't blowing the doors off, but it's consistent, and frankly, it's done exactly what I wanted it to do: provide a stable foundation through some choppy economic waters. I check in on the spot price monthly, but I’m not obsessing. It’s definitely helped me sleep better knowing a portion of my retirement isn't entirely exposed to the whims of the stock market. I always preach diversification to my clients, and I truly practice what I preach.
The process itself was surprisingly smooth, though I did spend a good few weeks vetting custodians and finding one that felt right. The fees are a consideration, of course, but for the peace of mind, I’ve found them acceptable. I'm currently sitting on around $250k in my whole retirement portfolio, and the gold portion feels like a solid 1/3 of that, which for me, feels right. I'm curious for anyone else who's been holding gold for a similar timeframe – what are your thoughts? Are you seeing similar returns? And for those who have been in longer, how have you adjusted your allocation over time?
