Been seeing a lot of new blood asking about precious metals IRAs lately, so figured I’d share my five-year experience with my Platinum IRA. I pulled the trigger on this back in 2018, shortly after officially retiring from the Street. Had a pretty significant chunk of my 401k sitting there, and after watching dot-com blow-ups and the '08 crisis from a front-row seat, I was just done with the traditional stock market for a good portion of my retirement savings. Converted about $850k into a self-directed IRA and went heavy on platinum, with some gold and silver as well.
My initial motivation was pure capital preservation, maybe a hedge against inflation. I honest-to-god wasn't expecting massive gains, just wanted a stable foundation, especially with concerns about fiat currency erosion. Fast forward to today, my platinum holdings alone are up a very comfortable percentage, definitely outperforming my expectations for a "safe" asset. The gold and silver have done their thing too, but platinum has been the real star for me. It’s given me a phenomenal sense of security and frankly, a better night’s sleep than I had during my last decade commuting from Greenwich to Midtown.
I know some folks on here always come back with "you could've just bought AAPL!" and yeah, maybe. But I wasn't just chasing returns; I was de-risking after decades in the financial wild west. This isn't about getting rich quick; it's about protecting what I've already earned. Given the current economic climate, I feel pretty vindicated in that decision. I still keep an eye on the market, but my metals are truly set-it-and-forget-it, except for the annual valuation statements.
For anyone debating whether to diversify into precious metals for their retirement, I'd seriously recommend doing your homework. Don't go all-in without understanding the market. A useful tool I stumbled across recently and wish I had earlier is a Gold IRA calculator – it’s great for modeling potential growth and seeing how different contributions might play out over time. Even though my main play was platinum, the principles are similar for all precious metals IRAs. Has anyone else here had a similar experience with their alternative asset IRAs over the last 5+ years? Any regrets for those who went heavy on other things?
