5 Years In – My Gold IRA Journey & Why I'm Sticking With It (for now)

Okay, so it’s been almost exactly five years since I rolled over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, and I figured it was a good time to reflect on the experience. When I first did it, I was pretty nervous. I'm a marketing exec here in Minneapolis, always dabbling in different investments, but this felt like a bigger leap than my usual stock picks. I initially put in about $100k, mostly because I was getting antsy about inflation and the general market volatility back then. My goal is an early retirement, probably in the next 10-12 years, so capital preservation alongside growth is key for me.
My returns haven't been earth-shattering, I'll be honest. I haven't tracked it to the penny like I do with my tech stocks, but a rough estimate puts me up around 35-40% over these five years. Not bad, definitely better than a savings account, but obviously not crypto-bro gains either. The real win for me has been the peace of mind. Knowing a portion of my portfolio isn't directly tied to the whims of the S&P 500 or the latest Fedspeak has been a huge psychological relief. Especially with all the geopolitical drama and economic uncertainty we've seen – it feels like a really solid hedge. I've even added another $25k to it in the last year, bringing my total allocation closer to 125k in physical gold within the IRA.
I know some people on these subs are super bullish on gold, and others are total skeptics. For me, it's about diversification. I’m not saying everyone should dump their life savings into it, but as a percentage of my overall portfolio, it feels right. The process was surprisingly smooth, too – once I found a reputable custodian. Maintenance fees are a thing, but they're manageable. I'm thinking about adding some silver coins to the mix next, just to broaden that precious metals exposure a bit. Has anyone here had good experiences with silver in their IRA? Any pitfalls I should be looking out for?
