Can't believe it's been five years since I first dipped my toes into a Gold IRA. My husband thought I was crazy, especially coming from a farming background where you see your wealth in land and livestock, not shiny metal. But with all the talk about inflation and the economy going sideways, I really felt a pull towards something tangible. We've got about $75k in it now, mostly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples, all stored safely in Delaware – a bit of a haul from Kansas City, but worth it for peace of mind.
I remember feeling so nervous making that first transfer. It was a chunk of our savings, and even though I'd read everything I could get my hands on, you never really know until you're in it, right? The team I worked with was super patient with all my questions, even when I called them back a second time to re-verify every step of the process. I think I initially put in about $30k, and slowly added to it over time. Seeing the value grow, even with the usual market ups and downs, has been really reassuring.
It's not like getting rich overnight, but the stability is what I was after. Especially with the price of feed and everything else going up, knowing a portion of our retirement isn't tied to the volatile stock market helps me sleep at night. My sister is still all-in on tech stocks, and bless her heart, but I just can't stomach those swings. I'm a farmer's wife; I like things I can hold in my hand and understand. Plus, knowing it's actual physical gold, and not just some paper certificate, makes a huge difference for me.
I'm curious to hear from others who've been in a Gold IRA for a while. What are your long-term strategies? Any regrets or things you'd do differently? I'm thinking about adding a small percentage of silver coins next, just for a bit more diversification within the precious metals. Has anyone here had experience with that? Would love to hear your thoughts!
