Hard to believe it's been five years since I first opened my Gold IRA. Seems like yesterday I was just dipping my toes into alternative assets after a long career in tech. I remember my financial advisor, bless his heart, almost having a stroke when I told him I wanted to allocate a significant chunk of my retirement to physical gold. He kept pushing mutual funds and bonds, but after seeing a few economic cycles come and go, I just had a gut feeling about diversifying beyond paper.
I started with roughly a million-dollar allocation, mostly in American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples, held securely at a depository. The whole process was smoother than I expected, though the paperwork was a bit of a slog. Fast forward to today, and that million is now comfortably sitting around $1.7 million, maybe even a touch more depending on the daily spot price. It's not the kind of wild growth you see in some tech stocks, but that wasn't the point for me. This is about capital preservation and true wealth protection, especially with all the printing going on. The peace of mind alone is worth a significant premium.
My advisor has definitely changed his tune, though he still gives me that look when I occasionally mention adding more. Living down here in Palm Beach, you see a lot of folks worried about maintaining their lifestyle and legacy, and gold just feels like a tangible store of value in a world that often feels increasingly intangible. Seriously considering adding another 250k-500k in the next year if the market keeps doing… whatever it is exactly doing. I know some people scoff at gold’s appreciation, but I sleep soundly knowing a good portion of my retirement isn’t subject to the whims of algorithms and geopolitical squabbles.
Curious to hear from others who have been in their Gold IRAs for a while. What are your longer-term plans? Are you holding steady, adding, or perhaps even thinking about taking distributions? Always value hearing different perspectives.
