I've been meaning to post an update on my Gold IRA for a while now, given some of the recent market rumblings. It's been 5 years since I parked a significant chunk of my portfolio, about $600k at the time, into physical gold within an IRA. My background's in the auto industry here in Detroit, retired after 30+ years, and I've always had a gold bug, going back to the late 90s, so this wasn't some spur-of-the-moment decision. Just felt like the natural evolution of my long-term strategy.
Initially, I was a little nervous about moving that much, wondering if I was buying in at a peak, but frankly, the past few years have been a relief. I haven't tracked it daily, that’s not my style, but looking at the overall performance, I’m pretty happy. It’s given me a significant buffer against inflation, especially with everything going on. My primary goal was wealth preservation and some diversification away from the stock market which, let's be honest, can feel like a rollercoaster these days. As of today, based on my latest statement, that initial $600k is sitting north of $850k. Not a get-rich-quick scheme, but for a conservative, long-term investor like me, it's solid peace of mind.
I still hold diversified assets, of course, but the gold portion has definitely outperformed some of my other more "traditional" investments in this timeframe. It’s been my anchor. Thinking about optimizing my full retirement picture, I used the Retirement Planner at https://retire.goldirablueprint.com/?forum recently, and it helped me visualize how my gold holdings fit into my overall income strategy for the next 15-20 years. Definitely recommend checking that out if you're trying to project things out.
My question for you all is: What have your experiences been like over a similar timeframe? Especially if you got into a Gold IRA around 2019-2020. Are you seeing similar returns? Or did you go with a different precious metal and how's that working out? Just curious to hear other perspectives.
