Just wrapped up my 401k to Gold IRA transfer and thought I’d share my experience for anyone else considering it. I’ve been a doctor here in Boston for a while now, and with a portfolio hovering around the high six figures, I’ve always been big on diversification. Gold has been a solid part of my strategy for years, but most of it was in Sprott physical. Decided to move a chunk of an old 401k into a Gold IRA to get more, well, direct exposure.
The whole process took about three and a half weeks from start to finish. I initiated the rollover with my old 401k provider (a big name, won't mention them here but you can probably guess) on May 1st. They were… leisurely, to say the least. Had to call them twice to gently nudge them along. The funds finally hit the Gold IRA custodian's account on May 20th. Then it was another week for the metals to be purchased and allocated to my account. I opted for a mix of American Gold Eagles and Canadian Maple Leafs, just for a bit more variety.
Honestly, I was expecting it to be a bit quicker, but I know these things can drag. My main concern was peace of mind during the transfer period, making sure nothing got lost in the shuffle. The Gold IRA reps were fantastic throughout, very communicative. Now that it's done, I feel a lot better about having a significant portion of my retirement savings hedged against inflation and geopolitical instability. Especially with everything going on in the world, it just feels like a smart move.
For those of you who’ve done similar rollovers, how long did your transfers take? Did anyone hit any unexpected snags? I'm curious if my experience was typical or if I just had a slow 401k custodian. Also, any Boston-area folks have recommendations for good local coin shops for smaller, direct gold purchases outside of the IRA structure?
