401k to Gold IRA transfer - how long for you guys?
- •Seriously wondering what everyone's experience has been on the 401k to Gold IRA transfer timeline.
- •It's just sitting there, losing value to inflation, and honestly, the thought of it being tied up in paper assets anymore is starting to chafe.
- •With the market doing whatever the hell it's doing, and all the uncertainty with interest rates, I want more of that physical asset exposure.
Seriously wondering what everyone's experience has been on the 401k to Gold IRA transfer timeline. I've been sitting on a chunk of change in an old 401k from a commercial project I sold off a few years back, probably pushing close to $2M in there that I'm finally getting around to rolling into precious metals. It's just sitting there, losing value to inflation, and honestly, the thought of it being tied up in paper assets anymore is starting to chafe. With the market doing whatever the hell it's doing, and all the uncertainty with interest rates, I want more of that physical asset exposure. I've already got a good amount in some rare silver coins and bars, but this 401k money needs to get shifted into gold, pronto.
I started the process about three weeks ago with my custodian and it feels like it's moving at a snail's pace. I'm used to things getting done quickly, especially with the kind of capital involved. Is this normal? My real estate deals usually close faster than this. I’m thinking about adding another $500k from a different account once this first transfer goes through, so if this is the standard speed, I need to adjust my expectations significantly. For those of you who have done a direct rollover from an old 401k, what was your realistic timeline from the initial paperwork to the gold actually being in your IRA account?
I’ve done a decent amount of research, even took that Gold IRA Quiz I saw floating around, which was actually pretty helpful for getting a high-level overview. But no quiz can tell you how long the actual bureaucratic nightmare will take. Any tips for speeding things up, or is it just a waiting game? My patience is wearing thin, especially with all the powder I have ready to redeploy into more metal. I'm in Aspen, so getting things shipped isn't usually an issue once the order is placed, but the transfer itself is what's holding everything up right now. Let me know your experiences and if there are any red flags I should be looking out for.
