401(k) to Gold IRA Rollover - My Experience (and some questions)

Just wrapped up a rollover from a chunk of my old 401(k) into a Gold IRA, and thought I'd share my experience given how much discussion there is around this stuff. As a jewelry store owner here in Providence, I’ve been dealing with precious metals literally my whole life, so the idea of physical gold in my retirement account just made a ton of sense, especially with the way the economy's been feeling lately. I didn't move my entire 401(k), just about $75k that was sitting around from a previous job. It felt like a good amount to diversify without putting all my eggs in one basket.
The process itself was... okay. Not as scary as I thought it might be, but it definitely took more hand-holding than just clicking "buy" on a stock. I went with a company that kept popping up in my research. Their rep was pretty helpful, explaining the direct vs. indirect rollover and all the tax implications. We opted for a direct rollover to avoid the whole 60-day rule panic. The biggest hiccup was actually with my old 401(k) administrator. They were slow getting the funds released, took almost three weeks just to cut the check, which made me a bit anxious. Once the funds were with the Gold IRA custodian, selecting the actual metals was the fun part. Went with mostly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maples for variety. It’s comforting knowing that value is sitting there.
My main motivation was really just hedging against inflation and market volatility. I see the price of gold every single day, and while it has its ups and downs, the long-term trend feels more stable than some of these tech stocks. Plus, running a small business, I'm always looking at ways to secure my own future without being entirely dependent on the market whims. It's a significant portion of my retirement savings now, something I can actually feel more confident about.
So, for those of you who've gone through this, what was your biggest takeaway? Did you feel the process was smooth or clunky? And for those who've had a Gold IRA for a while, any long-term insights or tips to share? I'm curious what others' experiences and feelings are after the fact.
