401k to Gold IRA - my recent rollover experience
- •I initiated the request with the custodian on April 15th, no real rush but wanted it moved before the next earnings season.

Just wrapped up my latest 401k rollover into my Gold IRA, and for those curious about the timeline, especially if you're an auto industry retiree like me and eyeing that precious metals security, here's my recent experience. This one was a bit smaller, around $80k from an old company 401k I’d left dormant – had a chunk of it sitting in some mutual funds that were just making me nervous with the current market volatility. I initiated the request with the custodian on April 15th, no real rush but wanted it moved before the next earnings season.
The first hurdle was always getting the old 401k administrator to cough up the funds. That took almost exactly two weeks for them to process the paperwork and cut the check. Honestly, I've seen that take longer, so I was pleasantly surprised. The check was then sent directly to my Gold IRA custodian. Once my Gold IRA custodian received the check, it took another 5 business days for them to fully process it and for the funds to show up as available. Then, another 2 days to get the actual gold allocated to my account and reflect on my statements. So, from initial request to seeing the gold allocated, we’re looking at about 3 weeks and 2 days. Not bad, right?
I’ve been in and out of gold for over 20 years, seen a lot of market cycles come and go. When I first started converting some of my retirement funds, things felt a lot more manual and took longer. This time around, it felt pretty streamlined, all things considered. I ended up converting that $80k into a mix of American Gold Eagles and some South African Krugerrands – love the history on those. It brings my total gold IRA holdings to just under $600k, a comfortable hedge against inflation from my perspective, especially living in an industrial town like Detroit where economic shifts can hit hard.
Anyone else do a rollover recently? How long did yours take? Any tips or tricks for speeding up the initial 401k release that I might be missing? Thinking about moving another chunk later this year, so always good to learn from others' experiences.
