Worried About Gold IRA Minimums for a Rollover
- •Naturally, that means I try to practice what I preach.

Okay, so I'm a principal here in Little Rock, and one of the things I always stress with my financial literacy students is the importance of planning for retirement. Naturally, that means I try to practice what I preach. I've been seriously looking into rolling over a portion of an old 401k into a Gold IRA. I’ve probably got around $75k sitting there that I'd like to move, just as a hedge against all the craziness happening in the market lately.
My main hang-up right now is these minimum investment requirements I keep seeing. Some places are listing $25k, others $50k. Is this standard across the board? It feels a little steep, especially since I'm not trying to throw my entire life savings at it, just diversify a bit. I thought the whole point of a rollover was to make it easier to transfer existing funds without too many hurdles.
I'm trying to figure out if there are providers out there that offer lower minimums for a rollover, or if I'm just looking in the wrong places. My concern is that if the minimum is too high, it might eat up too much of the capital I want to move, leaving me under-diversified in other areas. I’m thinking of putting maybe $20-30k into physical gold, nothing crazy, just a solid chunk.
Has anyone here managed to do a gold IRA rollover for a smaller amount, say under $25k, without getting hit with ridiculous fees? Or am I just going to have to bite the bullet and put in more than I initially planned? Any insights from folks who have actually gone through this process would be super helpful. What was your experience with minimums for a rollover?
