Why I diversified my Gold IRA with silver
- •I’m pushing 60, been in the dairy business my whole life up here in Wisconsin, and I've always been pretty practical when it comes to money.
- •My portfolio is in that $700k range, and I’d say about 15% of that is in precious metals through the IRA.
- •I started with just gold, putting in a solid chunk – something like $80k initially, maybe 4-5 years ago.
Been seeing a lot of talk here about sticking purely to gold in an IRA, and I just wanted to share why I decided to add silver to my own Gold IRA a couple of years back. I’m pushing 60, been in the dairy business my whole life up here in Wisconsin, and I've always been pretty practical when it comes to money. My portfolio is in that $700k range, and I’d say about 15% of that is in precious metals through the IRA. I started with just gold, putting in a solid chunk – something like $80k initially, maybe 4-5 years ago.
The decision to add silver wasn't a sudden one. I was talking to my son-in-law, who’s a bit of a history buff, and he was explaining the historical gold-to-silver ratio and how it’s still way out of whack compared to what it used to be. Plus, he pointed out all the industrial uses for silver that gold just doesn't have. Manufacturing, solar panels, electronics – it's everywhere. That really clicked with me. Gold is a classic safe-haven, no doubt, but silver just felt like it had more room to run, especially if the economy keeps chugging along and demand for those industrial materials stays high.
So, about two years ago, I rolled over another $25k or so of an old 401k into my Gold IRA and specifically earmarked a good portion of it for silver. I figured it was a good way to get some additional leverage in the precious metals market without going all-in. It feels like a smart hedge, giving me exposure to both the traditional store of value and something that could really pop if industrial demand continues to climb. Anyone else here feel the same way about diversifying beyond just gold in their IRA? Or did I just overcomplicate things for myself?
