Why I added silver to my Gold IRA - My experience
- •Been seeing a lot of talk lately about people sticking *purely* to gold for their precious metals IRA, and honestly, I get it.
- •For years, pretty much since I started messing with commodities back in my steel days, gold was my primary play.
- •Always made sense, especially with inflation jitters and the dollar doing its usual dance.
Been seeing a lot of talk lately about people sticking purely to gold for their precious metals IRA, and honestly, I get it. For years, pretty much since I started messing with commodities back in my steel days, gold was my primary play. Always made sense, especially with inflation jitters and the dollar doing its usual dance. My Gold IRA was a pretty vanilla affair for a long time – just stacking various gold coins and bars, probably sitting on about $300k-$350k of it right now in there.
But about 18 months ago, give or take, I started really digging into silver’s potential. The industrial demand angle is what truly grabbed me. Gold is primarily a monetary and jewelry metal, right? Silver's got that too, but then you look at solar, EVs, electronics... the sky's the limit for practical applications. That struck a chord with me, given my background. It feels like it's got an inherent value floor that gold, while still solid, might not always boast in the same way. Plus, the gold-to-silver ratio was looking pretty attractive at the time I pulled the trigger, which definitely helped make the decision easier.
So, I rebalanced a bit. Didn't dump any gold, mind you. Just redirected some new contributions and did an internal exchange with my custodian to diversify. Now I've got roughly 15-20% of my precious metals IRA in silver, mainly American Silver Eagles and some 100oz bars. It feels like a smart move for additional downside protection and potential upside if the industrial story really takes off. For anyone else who's been all-in on gold, have you considered adding silver? What were your reasons for or against it? Curious to hear other perspectives, especially from folks who’ve been in this game longer than I have.
