Okay, serious question for this community: what are your experiences with IRA custodians specializing in physical gold and other precious metals? I'm hitting a wall with my current one and it's making me seriously reconsider where my capital is parked. Moved most of my tech company exit to gold a few years back, talking about a good chunk of change – just under $3 million went into physical assets, and the rest is still liquid. I'm based in Dublin, OH, and I need a custodian who gets that this isn't pocket change we're talking about, and that responsiveness is key.
My current custodian—who I won't name publicly just yet—has been an absolute nightmare when I need information or statements. I mean, it takes days, sometimes over a week, to get a simple question answered about my holdings or distributions. They seem perpetually understaffed or just completely disorganized. For someone who built a company around efficiency and quick turnarounds, this slow pace is incredibly frustrating and, frankly, a huge red flag. I'm used to systems that work, and this definitely isn't it.
I went with them originally because they were recommended by my financial advisor at the time, and their fees seemed competitive. But honestly, I'd pay a bit more for peace of mind and decent customer service. Are there any custodians you guys have had genuinely great experiences with? I’m looking for reliability, transparency, and a team that actually picks up the phone or responds to emails within a reasonable timeframe. I'm thinking about rolling over my entire Gold IRA because this level of service is just unacceptable.
Specifically, if anyone has experience with custodians that handle larger accounts ($1M+), I'd love to hear about it. What are their communication like? Are their online portals user-friendly? Have you had any issues with withdrawals or reporting? Any war stories or glowing recommendations would be hugely appreciated before I make a switch. This is my retirement we're talking about, not some small investment.
