Finally pulled the trigger and rolled over about $200k from an old 401k into a Gold IRA with some physical gold backing it. Been sitting on that 401k from my previous gig for a few years, watching the market do its thing, and honestly, felt like I was a little too exposed to just equities. Working in bourbon, you get a real appreciation for things with a tangible value and a long history, not just numbers on a screen. The process itself wasn't too bad. Found a custodian that specialized in self-directed IRAs and worked with them to get the funds transferred. Decided to go with a mix of American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maples. Figured sticking with recognized sovereign coins was the most straightforward way to go for liquidity down the line if I ever needed it. Got 'em stored securely, obviously.
I'm not looking for some crazy short-term gains here. This is more about wealth preservation and having a stable base in the portfolio, especially with inflation worries and all. It’s part of a larger diversification strategy – still have plenty in stocks and other assets. But knowing I have a solid chunk of honest-to-goodness gold makes me sleep a little better at night. Anyone else in a similar boat, especially with an older 401k? What was your experience like?
