So, I’m 5 years into my Gold IRA and figured I’d share my journey. As a jewelry store owner here in Providence, I’ve always had a pretty good handle on precious metals. I see the demand, I know the market fluctuations, and honestly, I was getting a little antsy with how much of my retirement was tied up in traditional stocks. Felt like I was just watching numbers on a screen without anything tangible.
About five years ago, I decided to diversify and opened a Gold IRA. I rolled over about $75,000 from an old 401k into it. It wasn’t a huge chunk of my retirement, but enough to make a difference without feeling like I was betting the farm. My main goal wasn’t to get rich overnight, but more as a hedge against inflation and market volatility. I went with a company that my cousin in Boston recommended after they helped his parents out. Their fees were reasonable, and the setup was pretty straightforward, took less time than I expected honestly.
Now, five years later, that $75,000 is sitting at roughly $105,000. That’s about a 40% return, which I'm obviously pretty happy with. Considering everything that's happened in the world – global economic jitters, inflation hitting us all – I feel like that was a really solid move. It’s certainly outpaced some of my other more conventional investments over the same period. Plus, there’s a peace of mind knowing I have physical assets backing a portion of my retirement.
I know some people are skeptical about the fees and storage, but for me, the security and potential upside were worth it. It’s not for everyone, obviously, but for someone like me who literally deals with gold every day, it just made sense. Are there any other business owners out there, especially small business folks, who’ve gone this route for their retirement? How’s it been holding up for you? Thinking about perhaps adding a bit more next year if the market looks right.
