Finally got around to rolling over a good chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Been thinking about it for a while, especially with all the volatility lately, and figured it was time to put some of my eggs in a different basket. I've been in the dairy business here in Wisconsin for over 30 years, seen enough ups and downs to know that relying solely on stocks for retirement ain't always the smartest play. For reference, this was about $150k out of a total portfolio hovering around $800k. I’m not going all-in, but felt good diversifying a bit.
The process itself was surprisingly straightforward, honestly. I’d heard horror stories about red tape and high-pressure sales, but that wasn't my experience. I went with Augusta Precious Metals after doing a lot of due diligence – checked out their BBB, talked to a few recommended reps, the whole nine yards. They walked me through the direct rollover from my old employer's 401k administrator to the new IRA custodian. Didn't touch the money myself, kept it all tax-free, which was obviously key. The transfer took about two and a half weeks from start to finish, which felt reasonable.
Picking the actual metals was interesting. Decided to go with mostly American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Maple Leafs. Just felt comfortable with the recognized government-minted coins. Their representative was helpful but not pushy, which I appreciated. They talked through the pros and cons of different options without making me feel pressured to buy something I didn't want. The storage is at Delaware Depository – seemed like a solid, reputable choice.
Feeling a good bit more secure now, knowing that a portion of my retirement isn't just sitting in paper assets. It's real, tangible wealth. Anyone else here in the Midwest or elsewhere done a similar rollover recently? What were your experiences? Any pitfalls I should be aware of down the line, or things you wish you'd known?
