Thoughts on "small investor" gold IRAs? My experience with big holdings.

Been seeing a lot of posts lately about the "best gold IRA for small investors" and it got me thinking. I'm a bit of an old timer compared to some folks here, been in gold for over 20 years myself, and my Gold IRA is a decent chunk of my retirement, probably sitting between $500k and $1M these days. I started small too, back when I was still wrenching on cars at Ford in Detroit. DCA'd my way up over two decades, picked up some nice St. Gaudens and Britannias along the way, besides the general bullion.
My question for those just starting out, or with smaller portfolios (let's say under $100k for argument's sake), are the fees really that much more prohibitive? I remember when I first opened mine, the minimums felt pretty steep, even though I was putting away a good portion of my paycheck. I've been with the same company for a long time, and honestly, the fees don't even register anymore with the size of my holdings. But if you're only putting in $10k or $20k, does that percentage really eat into your gains?
I know some companies advertise lower minimums, but my gut tells me their storage or administrative fees might be higher on a percentage basis to compensate. Or maybe they push certain types of coins with higher premiums? I'm genuinely curious what the landscape looks like for new entrants these days. I've always stuck with the big, established players because of the peace of mind, but maybe I'm missing out on something that's better for smaller accounts. Any Detroiters out there with recent experiences they want to share?
It's always a tough balance between security, fees, and accessibility. For me, security was always paramount – didn't want my nest egg riding solely on stocks after seeing a few downturns during my career. What are you all prioritizing when you're just getting started?
