Thoughts on Platinum - Looking to diversify outside of just gold and silver?

    Key Takeaways
    • Currently, almost all of my ~$80k portfolio is split between gold and silver.
    • I inherited a good chunk of it — what my late husband, bless his heart, had carefully built up over the years.
    • He was such a shrewd investor, and I feel a real responsibility to grow what he left for me, not just maintain it.
    The 3-step rollover process explained

I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter lately about platinum potentially being undervalued, and it's making me wonder if it’s a good time to consider adding some to my precious metals portfolio. Currently, almost all of my ~$80k portfolio is split between gold and silver. I inherited a good chunk of it — what my late husband, bless his heart, had carefully built up over the years. He was such a shrewd investor, and I feel a real responsibility to grow what he left for me, not just maintain it.

My Gold IRA is with Augusta Precious Metals, and they’ve been fantastic. When I first started working with them, my primary focus was on replicating his gold and silver holdings. But lately, with all this talk about industrial demand for platinum, especially with green energy and hydrogen fuel cells, it seems like there's a strong case for future growth. It's almost always traded at a premium to gold, and now the prices are pretty close.

It's a big decision, especially since expanding beyond gold and silver feels like uncharted territory for me. I live in Raleigh, NC, and I've been considering setting up a meeting with my Augusta contact to discuss it more seriously. Does anyone here have platinum in their IRA? Have you seen good returns, or has it been more volatile than you expected? I’m particularly interested in hearing from anyone who has diversified into platinum recently. Is it a good idea to put, say, 10-15% of my portfolio into platinum, or should I stick to gold and silver as a widow trying to protect her late husband's legacy?

Totally get where you're coming from! I had a similar thought process a few years back. Was all gold and silver, then started looking into platinum. Ended up picking up some platinum Eagles and a few bars. Definitely feels good to have that extra layer of diversification beyond the usual two. No regrets so far!

Interesting! When you say "chatter lately," are you seeing this specifically in investment circles, or more broadly in economic news? Just curious what's sparking the interest!

Interesting thought, but I'm not entirely convinced on platinum as a primary diversification play for a *retirement* account specifically. While it definitely has industrial demand, its price volatility historically has been higher than gold or even silver. If you're looking for stability and a hedge against inflation for your golden years, that increased volatility might be a bigger risk than the potential for undervaluation upside.

I'd personally stick with the tried-and-true gold and silver for the bulk of an IRA, and maybe consider platinum for a smaller, more speculative portion of a non-retirement portfolio if I was feeling adventurous. Just my two cents!

Hey, that's a good question! Platinum can definitely be an interesting addition for diversification, especially given its industrial demand on top of its precious metal status.

One thing to keep in mind is that platinum's price can be a bit more volatile than gold or silver sometimes. If you're looking for a good resource to track its historical performance and understand the market dynamics a bit better, Kitco often has excellent articles and charts specifically on platinum.
