Thinking about setting up gold for the grandkids' future

    Key Takeaways
    • Been doing a lot of thinking lately about the grandkids, especially with my son taking over more of the logistics company.
    • It's a good business, built it from the ground up here in Memphis over 30 years, and I’m ready to start enjoying more time with the missus.
    • We've got a decent portfolio, probably sitting around $750k, and a decent chunk of that is allocated to my Gold IRA.

Been doing a lot of thinking lately about the grandkids, especially with my son taking over more of the logistics company. It's a good business, built it from the ground up here in Memphis over 30 years, and I’m ready to start enjoying more time with the missus. We've got a decent portfolio, probably sitting around $750k, and a decent chunk of that is allocated to my Gold IRA. Those American Gold Eagles I picked up a few years back have done well, and honestly, they just feel more substantial than looking at numbers on a screen.

My question for this group is around setting up something similar for the next generation. I want to make sure my grandkids have a solid foundation, something tangible that isn't just subject to the whims of the stock market. I’m thinking about setting up some sort of trust or custodial account that specifically holds gold coins for them. Not looking to give them access to it until they’re older, maybe 25 or 30. Does anyone here have experience with that? What’s the best way to structure it so it's protected but also easy to transfer when the time comes?

I’m particularly interested in hearing about the tax implications of gifting gold, or if there's a better way to do it for long-term legacy planning. I’ve heard about things like Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (UGMA) or Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA) accounts, but I'm not sure how well they work with physical gold. Is it better to just buy the gold outright and store it for them, or is there a specific investment vehicle that makes more sense? Any advice from those who've gone down this road would be really helpful.

This is a great idea! I did something similar for my niece and nephews a few years back. Not quite gold, but I set up some long-term stock funds for them. It's awesome to think about their future and how these early investments can really snowball. Gold is definitely a solid choice too, especially with all the economic uncertainty these days. Good on ya!

That's a really thoughtful idea for your grandkids! It sounds like the business is in good hands. Just curious, when you say "gold for the grandkids," are you thinking more along the lines of physical gold they'd inherit, or are you looking into a gold-backed IRA that they could eventually manage?

That's a thoughtful idea, but honestly, for grandkids, I'd lean more towards a diversified portfolio with some growth stocks. Gold is great for stability, sure, but over a multi-decade horizon for young ones, you might be leaving a lot of potential gains on the table with just precious metals. Just my two cents!

Hey, that's a really thoughtful idea for your grandkids! Gold can definitely be a solid legacy. Just a heads up, when you're looking into Gold IRAs, make sure you understand the difference between allocated and unallocated gold. Allocated means the specific physical gold you own is stored for you, while unallocated is more like an IOU. For long-term security for family, often allocated is preferred for that direct ownership.

    Good luck with the planning!

This is a great idea! I'm doing something similar for my niece and nephew. Not quite a full Gold IRA, but I've been buying a few fractional gold coins (1/10th and 1/4th oz) for them every year on their birthdays. It's a nice way to slowly build up a tangible asset for them without a huge upfront cost, and it's something they can hold onto for a long, long time.
