Thinking About Recession-Proofing? My Experience with
Hey everyone,
Ronald Morris here, coming to you from sunny Virginia Beach. Hope you're all doing well. Lately, with all the talk about potential economic bumps in the road, it's got me reflecting a lot on the strategies I've put in place for my own retirement, especially regarding precious metals. As a retired Navy Admiral, I learned the importance of discipline and diversification the hard way, and that's exactly how I approach my investments. My IRA, which is comfortably in the $1M-$5M range, has a significant portion allocated to gold. I started really focusing on diversifying into physical gold probably about 10-15 years ago, precisely because I wanted that bedrock stability, that true "recession-proof" element, that equities just can't always provide.
I remember back during one of the market downturns, watching my stock portfolio take a hit, and feeling that familiar knot in my stomach. But then I'd look at my gold holdings, and there was a sense of calm. It's not about making a quick buck for me; it's about preserving wealth and ensuring my wife, Sarah, and I can enjoy our golden years without constantly worrying about market volatility. It’s about not having to constantly check the news or worry about the latest CPI report. That peace of mind is truly invaluable. I'm curious to hear from others – what percentage of your total portfolio have you allocated to precious metals, and what was your primary motivation for doing so?
Speaking of diversification, I recently stumbled upon a really useful little tool that I thought some of you might appreciate. It’s called "Silver vs Stocks" and it let me compare the performance of silver against the stock market over different periods. I tried looking at the 10-year period, and it was a real eye-opener in how metals can perform relative to traditional stocks, especially when you're thinking long-term and trying to hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty. It's a simple, straightforward visualization and just reinforces why I feel good about my precious metals allocations.
Anyway, just wanted to throw out some thoughts. Always great to hear different perspectives from this community. What are your strategies for recession-proofing your retirement savings?
Best regards,
Ronald Morris
