    ⭕ Gold Rounds

Thinking about rebalancing the gold portion of my retirement... advice?

    Key Takeaways
    • My retirement portfolio is usually in the mid-to-high six figures, so we're talking about a significant chunk of that still being in gold.
    • Lately, I've been looking at my asset allocation, and that gold percentage is starting to creep up higher than I ideally want it to be.
    • Not complaining, mind you, good problem to have!

Okay, so I've been sitting pretty for a while with my gold IRA, mostly in Eagles and a decent chunk in some pre-33 stuff I picked up back when the premiums weren't quite so nuts. My retirement portfolio is usually in the mid-to-high six figures, so we're talking about a significant chunk of that still being in gold. I've been in the dairy business my whole life up here in Wisconsin, so I like things steady and reliable, and gold has been that for me, especially with all the craziness in the world.

Lately, I've been looking at my asset allocation, and that gold percentage is starting to creep up higher than I ideally want it to be. Not complaining, mind you, good problem to have! But it got me thinking about whether it makes more sense to diversify within the gold holdings themselves. I've always been a coin guy, but I've been seeing a lot more talk about gold rounds lately – generic ones, sure, but the lower premiums are definitely attractive.

My thought process is this: would it be smarter to sell off some of my higher-premium coins (maybe some of the more numismatic stuff that's really appreciated) and then use some of those proceeds to buy into generic rounds? I'm talking about a decent chunk, maybe 50-70k worth. The idea is to maintain my overall gold exposure but reduce the average premium paid across my holdings. It feels like a practical, Midwestern kind of move, you know? Less flash, more substance.

Has anyone here done something similar? Or am I overthinking this? I'm mainly concerned about liquidity if I ever need to offload a portion, especially with generic rounds. Are they as easy to sell back to dealers as, say, a standard American Eagle? Any insights from folks who've rebalanced their physical gold would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, that's a good problem to have! When you're rebalancing a significant gold IRA, especially with pre-33, it's worth considering the tax implications if you're looking to sell and reallocate. A lot of people overlook that even in an IRA, certain transactions can trigger tax events depending on how they're structured.

You might find the tax guides from some of the larger precious metals IRA custodians helpful – they often have sections specifically on rebalancing within an IRA. It's not always straightforward, so getting clear on that beforehand can save you some headaches come tax season.

Totally get this. I was in a similar boat a few years back with some old European gold coins I'd held for ages. The premiums got so wild it just felt... unbalanced, you know? Ended up consolidating some of it into more straightforward bullion to calm my nerves. No regrets so far, but it was definitely a decision that took some thought.

Sounds like you've got a nice setup already! When you say "rebalancing," are you looking at selling off some of the pre-33 to diversify within gold, or are you thinking of reducing your overall gold allocation a bit?

Interesting strategy with the pre-33! While diversification is always key, are you sure rebalancing *out* of gold right now is the move? With all the current economic uncertainty, gold tends to be a pretty reliable safe haven. Just something to consider before you make any big shifts.
