Thinking about rebalancing my gold stock holdings, anyone else?

I’ve been eyeing my portfolio this past week and seriously considering a bit of a rebalance within my gold equities. Most of my capital is tied up in physical metals (thank goodness for that, especially watching the banking headlines lately), but the allocation I do have in gold miners could probably use some fine-tuning. I've primarily held GDX and some of the larger, more established players for years – think Barrick, Newmont, that kind of thing. They’ve done well enough, but I'm starting to wonder if I’m missing out on some upside potential by being too conservative with the smaller to mid-cap explorers and developers.
My old Wall Street buddies keep telling me to stick with the "blue chips" of the gold world, but honestly, after being retired for a while and seeing how things actually play out, I’m more open to a bit more calculated risk. I'm not talking about putting a huge chunk of my 7-figure metal allocation into some obscure penny stock, but maybe shifting 5-10% of my equity portion into a few promising junior miners. Living here in NYC, we get a lot of noise about tech and growth, but I’ve always believed in hard assets, and that extends to the companies pulling them out of the ground. The question is, which ones?
Has anyone here had good experiences (or terrible ones, for that matter) diversifying into some of the smaller gold plays? Are there any specific regions or types of projects you’re favoring right now? I'm particularly interested in companies with strong balance sheets and proven reserves, but maybe just under the radar compared to the giants. Any thoughts on how to identify those solid mid-tier opportunities without getting burned? Appreciate any insights.
