Been thinking a lot about my Gold IRA lately, not just for my own retirement, but how it fits into legacy planning for the kiddos. I started this thing when I turned 40, so about 7 years ago now. It’s sitting pretty nice, probably a bit over 70k at this point, and it's mostly gold with a small amount of silver. My main goal is definitely to supplement my government pension when I retire from my job here in Albuquerque, but the more I read, the more I wonder about the long-term, multi-generational wealth aspect.

My kids are still pretty young, and their idea of "wealth" is probably another video game or a new bike, haha. But I want to set them up for whatever life throws at them. The stability of gold, especially compared to some of the market swings we’ve seen, feels like a solid foundation. I’m not sure if I should just leave it as is, or if there are specific strategies for passing on a Gold IRA. Like, can they just inherit the physical metal, or does it all get liquidated? Are there tax implications I should be thinking about now, even though that’s decades away?

I’ve been using that Retirement Planner tool I found a while back to model different scenarios for my own retirement, and it’s been super helpful for visualizing how my gold translates into future purchasing power. But it doesn't really touch on the legacy side of things. Does anyone have experience with this? What’s the best way to structure it so it benefits them down the line, without getting eaten by fees or taxes?

It's one thing to plan for your own golden years, but planning for your kids' grandkids' golden years... that's a whole different ballgame. Any advice from folks who have actually gone through this, or even just thought deeply about generational wealth with precious metals, would be awesome. Thanks in advance!

Totally get this! I actually had a very similar thought process with my own Gold IRA. Started mine around the same time, maybe 8 years ago now, and while it was initially for my own retirement, I've gradually started seeing it more as a potential long-term play for my nieces and nephews. It’s pretty cool to think about how something you set up for yourself could eventually benefit another generation.

Hey, that's a cool way to look at it – building a legacy for the kids! You mentioned it's "sitting pretty nice" after 7 years. Curious, what kind of gains are you seeing percentage-wise since you started?

Hey, that's a cool thought process for sure! While a Gold IRA is definitely a fantastic way to diversify and protect wealth, have you considered how accessible it might be for your kids in the distant future compared to other assets? Like, if they needed immediate funds for a house downpayment or something similar, a Gold IRA has a few more hoops to jump through than, say, a standard brokerage account they could just inherit. Just something to chew on when you're looking *way* down the line for them.

That's a smart way to look at it, thinking long-term for your kids! Given you're already in a Gold IRA, have you looked into strategies for passing it on? Something like a "stretch IRA" for beneficiaries could be super useful to maximize the tax-deferred growth for them. Might be worth a chat with a financial advisor who specializes in estate planning to see how it applies to your specific situation and beneficiaries.

Here's a decent article that breaks down the basics of beneficiary IRAs if you want to do some light reading: Investopedia: Stretch IRA
