Thinking about diversifying 401k with gold? My experience.

I've been seeing a lot of chatter lately, both on here and in some of my other investing circles, about people looking to diversify their 401k portfolios, specifically into gold. As someone who went through this process fairly recently, I thought I'd share my experience and see what others are thinking.
I’m a doctor up in Boston, and for years, my portfolio was pretty standard – mostly stocks and bonds, with a decent chunk in my work-sponsored 401k. As I hit my late 40s (I'm 52 now), and with a portfolio hovering around the $750k mark, I started feeling a bit uneasy about having so much tied up in traditional assets, especially with all the economic uncertainty we’ve been seeing. I'd always been interested in gold as a hedge against inflation and market volatility, but honestly, the thought of navigating the logistics of putting it in my retirement account felt pretty daunting.
After a good six months of research and talking to a few different financial advisors (and let me tell you, finding one who truly understood precious metals with retirement accounts was key!), I decided to do a partial rollover of my 401k into a Gold IRA. I ended up moving about 10% of my total portfolio, roughly $75,000, into physical gold. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward once I found the right custodian. They essentially handled the transfer from my old 401k provider to the new self-directed IRA, and then I just had to pick out the types of gold I wanted.
So far, I'm feeling really good about the decision. It’s given me a sense of security that I didn't have before, knowing a portion of my retirement savings isn't directly tied to the whims of the stock market. Of course, gold has its own ups and downs, but for me, it’s about that long-term stability and diversification. Has anyone else gone through this? What were your biggest concerns or takeaways from diversifying your 401k with precious metals?
