I'm a bit torn about the storage fees for my Gold IRA. I've got approximately $75k in gold rounds right now, mostly American Eagles and some Buffalos, and I'm really happy with how it's performed over the last few years. Seriously, it’s been a great hedge against all the craziness out there. My custodian charges me a flat rate of $150 a year for segregated storage. I know some places do a percentage, but mine's always been this flat fee. I'm in Little Rock, and this seemed pretty standard when I first set it up about five years ago.
My concern is this: I'm planning to roll over another chunk of my 403(b) next year – probably another $25k or so into the Gold IRA, depending on market conditions. Totaling around $100k makes me wonder if I'm still getting a good deal on that flat fee. At $75k, it’s about 0.2% which seems really fair. But at $100k, it drops to 0.15%, which sounds even better, right? However, what if the value of my gold spikes and I'm sitting on $150k in a few years? Then that $150 flat fee is an even smaller percentage. So, on one hand, I feel like a flat fee is a good thing as my portfolio grows. On the other, I know some folks swear by percentage-based fees, especially for smaller accounts.
I’m a school principal and I teach financial literacy to my students, so I like to think I’m pretty good at numbers, but deciphering optimal storage fees always feels a little squishy. I've been looking at different custodians online, and I see a real mix of flat fees versus percentage fees. Some places are talking 0.5% or even 1% of the asset value for storage, which feels really high, especially if your portfolio is substantial. Is my $150/year in a good range for segregated storage, regardless of the portfolio growth? Or should I be looking for options that shift to percentage fees once you hit a certain threshold?
For those of you with Gold IRAs, especially if your portfolio is in a similar range ($50k-$100k+), what are you paying for storage? Segregated versus commingled – what are your thoughts there? I’ve always preferred segregated for peace of mind. I’ve even messed around with the Gold IRA Calculator to see potential returns and how those fees might eat into them over the long haul. Any insights on what's considered a "fair" or "competitive" storage fee in today's market would be super helpful. Trying to make sure I'm not leaving money on the table, or worse, paying too much for the peace of mind.
